Bonampak - Practical Information

Transportation, How to get there? : Take an airplane to Villahermosa is the closest airport to Palenque, then take a bus or rent a car to get there. Bonampak and Yaxchilan are 2 hours and a half away from Palenque. It's not so easy to get there so an organized local tour, be sold in Palenque, would be better. If you are driving watch out for the indigenous that are in the road. They pull strings to block the way, don't stop, ingore them and continue. If you stop give them $20 pesos or $10 and go. This is very important, if you are driving from Palenque fill your gas tank and refill it in every gas station you see. Normally if you go to Bonampak you also go to Yaxchilan, they are 30 km away, go early from Palenque. See more information for a complete tour...

Time length:
From Mexico City it would be 1:15 to Toluca (cheaper flights), 2:00 airplane trip either from Mexico or Toluca to Villahermosa, 2:30 hours from Villahermosa to Palenque and 2:30 hours from Palenque. If you go from San Cristobal it's 5 to 6 hours by bus.

Accomodation:

We suggest you to accomodate in a hotel in Palenque or in the Patchanga hostel in Palenque (next to the ruins) if you return that same day. If you stay in the area ask to the village people for a place to stay, there are very cheap places were they rent you a hammock or cabin.

Bonampak Entrance Fee:

Free for students and teachers. Entrance to the ruins $30.00 pesos. And they will charge you $20.00 pesos for a drive to the ruins.

Recomendations:

Normally people visit Bonampak after going to Yaxchilan, is a tour that starts in Palenque. Take food and water, the trip is long and you will walk a lot. Going to this places is not so easy but it is magical experience. This two ruins are not so turistic as Palenque and are in the middle of the Lacandona Jungle, thats what makes them so special. If you go here and are an adventurous person, take a walk into the Lacandona Jungle, ask a tourist guide to go with you.

Safe travel:

If you drive here don't do it at night, also fill your gas tank in every gas station you see. Don't separate from the group or tourist guide you are here, you can get lost in the jungle.

While you are there:

Don't get tired the ruins are very big and every spot is important. Don't miss Yaxchilan is very close to Bonampak and if you can buy a tour or find a guide to take you for a walk in the Lacandona Jungle.
